Polyurethane foam has a well-documented record as an outstanding insulation product. Not only does it add structural integrity by its adhesion to most materials, it is unequaled in insulation quality. No other insulation material has such a favorable R value. These are the reasons why polyurethane foam is selected for refrigerators, freezers and hot water heaters. During application, the polyurethane foam expands to fill all cracks and voids to form a seal that eliminates leaks around studs, windows, sills, door frames and penetrations for plumbing and electrical supply. An additional benefit from sealing the cracks and crevices is the elimination of passageways for unwanted house guests in the form of insects.
Nor only will your home stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, there will be energy savings as well. The National Energy Laboratories report "air infiltration wastes 40% of the heating and cooling dollar." The U.S. Department of Energy states, "Many air leaks are indirect. Air penetrates the shell in one location, flows through building cavities and emerges at a different location."
The average house is riddled with leaks. Each gap, joint and break in a surface is an opportunity for air to infiltrate. Studies have found that throughout a typical house, the area of all leaks combined is equivalent to a wide open door. Another study by the Florida Energy Center shows air infiltration responsible for 28% energy costs. Clearly, any opening in the structure directly impacts the energy budget.

The quantity of insulation per application will vary depending on the climate where the building is located in addition, the size and configuration of the building will govern the amount of insulation.
Home comfort and lower utility bills do not directly relate to wall thickness. Commercial airplanes routinely fly at altitudes where the exterior air temperature is -30 F but maintain a comfortable cabin due to the urethane foam insulation and sealer. Eskimos, too, are able to withstand the harsh arctic climate with the warmth of a single candle because of tightly sealed igloos.
Along with air infiltration, humidity adversely affects home comfort. Moisture moves from an area of high concentration to one of low concentration. An unsealed building will have moisture continuously pumping through the walls. It's a common misconception that a building needs to "breathe". A breathing building is a leaking building. ASTM tests have demonstrated that moisture will move freely through fiberglass. and with moisture present, their tests show a 50% drop in the fiberglass insulating effectiveness. As a result, an Rig wall is actually performing like an R-9.5. By first sealing the walls with a urethane spray insulation, the wall is totally sealed to moisture and air infiltration. This seal delivers the actual R value expected.
